The BBC today revealed that the companion for the forthcoming series of Doctor Who will be Karen Gillan.

Twenty-one-year-old Gillan will star alongside new Time Lord, Matt Smith, when the smash hit drama returns to BBC One in spring 2010.

With filming due to begin this summer, Gillan beat off dozens of hopefuls to land one of television's most coveted roles.

Gillan said: "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

"Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!"

Lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, added: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Executive Producer and Head of Drama BBC Wales, Piers Wenger, said: "We knew Karen was perfect for the role the moment we saw her. She brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic. And when she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special. It is a partnership that is ready to take on the universe!"

The new series of Doctor Who comes to BBC One, Spring 2010.

That fills me with a sense of horror.
I think I'm seeing double this morning :lol.
You should stop having Baileys on your cornflakes then... no double posts by me here, nope, non at all.
I saw a full body pic of him in the paper today, complete with leather patches the the elbows of his jacket :(
why have they turned the youngest Doctor into an old man? They could have made a change and made him look his age.
I suppose they are making him look more how his mental age is rather than his seeming physical age.

Alex Kingston has been seen on set, so it looks as if we will also see the return or River Song, i would'nt be surprised to see her in Tennants farewell either.

Gillan has been seen sporting some rather fetching tights aswell as a pair of Blue Converse Allstars. They must of struck a deal with BBC Cymru.

I can't help but feel like next years series is going to be a bit poo.

I really hope I'm wrong, but so far it just doesn't look too good.

On the upside, does this mean The Master is in this years xmas special? Woo John Simm rocked as The Master.

Well i wasn't sure about tennant when he first arrived either as i got used to the first Doctor i think we may need to wait and see

Yeah, but at least his costume looked cool. The new one has a bit too much of the Sylvester McCoys about it for my liking. Tweed elbow patches? Dubya Tee Eff?!

The fact that Steve Moffat is at the helm should qualm any fears you have about next years series, yes it'll be different but it is frikkin the multi Hugo award winning Steve Moffat we're talking about here.

true, but Dr Who is the best British Sci-fi going so i am gald it is still going

Did you understand the joke Jay, its hard to tell sometimes.

I know the facts are there to say it should be brilliant, but I'm still not getting a very good gut feeling about this series. Plus how do you top the end of the season with John Simm as The Master? It's just not possible!

Oh and if that is the new logo, it's not very good. Why bother changing it? Or is that supposed to be the whole point, the whole thing is changing to a different direction?

In fact I think it's a logo they used in the kids comic a couple of months back?
