The BBC today revealed that the companion for the forthcoming series of Doctor Who will be Karen Gillan.

Twenty-one-year-old Gillan will star alongside new Time Lord, Matt Smith, when the smash hit drama returns to BBC One in spring 2010.

With filming due to begin this summer, Gillan beat off dozens of hopefuls to land one of television's most coveted roles.

Gillan said: "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

"Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!"

Lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, added: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Executive Producer and Head of Drama BBC Wales, Piers Wenger, said: "We knew Karen was perfect for the role the moment we saw her. She brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic. And when she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special. It is a partnership that is ready to take on the universe!"

The new series of Doctor Who comes to BBC One, Spring 2010.

Did you understand the joke Jay, its hard to tell sometimes.

not really, it could be the alchoal thou

Hartnell was the first Doctor, back in the 60s. You were meaning the 9th Doctor (I think) not the first.
yep that is th one, funny thing is, the first doctor looked and was very much based on the the traveller in the time machine, he looked and acted very victorian (source martians and us BBC)

Edwardian. ;)

that is the one of course the time machine was after 1902, my bad.

Dr Who no matter who is in the seat is better than no Dr who at all, look at touchwood it lacks something, it is missing something (not the gap between the leads teeth) it misses the Doctor

The Time Machine was Victorian old son. Not having a good night are you? :lol
your confusing me, then i was right then, the doctor was based on the time travaler's look at as there was no other reference before hand wasn't it set in 1900? so very close to edwarian. b ut anyway in the doc martian's and us by the BBC they said that it was clearly based on Wells work, which if you look at it it hard not to agree the later ones no but the first yes

The Time Machine was set in the 1890s, Victorian. The first Doctor wore Edwardian clothing (1900s).

I cant find anything on the BBC site about it being based on what you claim. Got a link?

no it was on a doc which was on Xmas 2008 called martian and us it was a three parter (i have i on DVD), extremely good if your like british SF it made the link between the first DR to the time traveler mainly because it was the only other character before to do the same. to be far 1890s and 1902 isn;t far a part especially if i remember rightly the film was based in 1899/1900.

edit: note its not an offical link it was a sci fi person who drew the links the guys with th elong hair and bad facial hair , who looked at who they where dressed and presented and saw the things in common of course this is an opinion, one that i share

OK, just found it on Youtube. They state 'Edwardian dressed', and they say they 'assume' its based on the traveller from the Time Machine. ;)
do you disagree?
I certainly agree there are similarities so strong that I'd be amazed if it wasnt the case. But that was never my point, I was mearly correcting you on your useage of time period dress. You were the one who kept moving the goalposts. :lol
alchoal is great for moving posts

Also:

Rap is atrong word.

Amen to that!

Just to expand on what I said earlier about them being alike, I didnt mean the dress sense itself, more the character as an overall:

Both are refered to as titles (The Doctor and The Traveller).

Both are scientists.

Both wear clothes of an era of the past (though The Traveller was wearing for him 'modern' cothing).

I think this came from the character being the archetype of a time traveller for that era of British writers.

which was my point

In which case stop posting until you are able to put down what you mean in a manner that can be understood.

he looked and acted very victorian

Was wrong, he looked Edwardian and acted like old man Steptoe. :lol

no you where prefectly right right about the dress, my bad!!!! the charcater itself and that you outlined was spot on. its great how great minds think alike isn't it :)
Or fools never differ. :P

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyhoo!

I agree with the post prior to Jay's drunken ramblings and DS's attempts to translate, I'm not really looking forward to this doctor, seen the picture, instant dislike, looks like one of those Oxford or Cambridge likes who you want to smack just for looking down on you in that snooty-arsed way!

Didn't like the first doctor (of the new series) either.
