The BBC today revealed that the companion for the forthcoming series of Doctor Who will be Karen Gillan.

Twenty-one-year-old Gillan will star alongside new Time Lord, Matt Smith, when the smash hit drama returns to BBC One in spring 2010.

With filming due to begin this summer, Gillan beat off dozens of hopefuls to land one of television's most coveted roles.

Gillan said: "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

"Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!"

Lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, added: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Executive Producer and Head of Drama BBC Wales, Piers Wenger, said: "We knew Karen was perfect for the role the moment we saw her. She brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic. And when she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special. It is a partnership that is ready to take on the universe!"

The new series of Doctor Who comes to BBC One, Spring 2010.

'Doctor Who' draws highest US ratings

Doctor Who attracted its highest ever primetime ratings in the US last weekend.

'Waters of Mars' was the first of three specials from the sci-fi show to air on BBC America and marked the finale to David Tennant's era as the Tenth Doctor.

Over 1.1 million viewers watched the programme on Saturday, ranking 13th in the US among ad-supported cable networks catering for demographics aged 25-54.

"The final specials starring David Tennant have opened the door for new audiences to this iconic series while taking long-time fans on an incredible journey," said Richard De Croce, senior vice president of BBC America.

"Tennant's remaining two specials 'The End of Time Part One' and 'Part Two' are the most-anticipated episodes in the history of the series, which is why we're airing them just a day after their UK premiere."

The 'End of Time' specials are due to premiere on December 26 at 9pm ET/PT and on January 2 at 8.30pm ET/PT respectively on BBC America.

Is todays Dr who repeated i missed it today.

it'll be on Iplayer for definite, might be repeated during the week as part 2 isnt til new years day.

I thought odays episode was shite, hoping the second episode picks up. Loved john Simm in his first run as the master, but he was just really annoying today.

I don't like the show at all, but a lot of my American friends. It's like THE British show to reference to prove that you have ever watched any British TV.

I enjoyed the episode, a lot of nice set up work.

Yeah, it was basically a one big build up to the New Years episode. I thouht the ending was tremendous.

"are you talking to me..."

"or me..."

"or me..."

"or us..."

Awesome.

Yeah, not the best episode but the pay off at the end was great. The 3 cliffhanger endings John Simm has been done in Doctor Who have all been brilliant. I just hope that what happened at the end gets The Master to calm down a bit and be more serious as another episode of what seemed to be post regeneration giddyness wouldn't be good but Simm was good at the parts that had a more serious edge to them.
I have to admit, I was a little bit wtf with that episode.

The episode was a little bit of a slow burner but had enougth to keep you intrested untill the end.

The scence with The Doctor and Wilf in the cafe was fantastic, as was the scence where the Doctor hears the Masters drums.

The first scence of the next episode is up on the official website if you care to take a look.

One thing I just remembered that I though was a pretty cool blink and you miss bit it was when we saw Donna's car.
I thought it was OK...not as good as I was hoping. That ending was a total shock though.
Agree totally about the scene in the café - Cribbins and Tennant were amazing in that scene. People forget or don't realise how bloody talented Bernard Cribbins actually is.

Just watching the guy on the Never Mind The Buzzcocks DW special reaffirmed how much of a legend Cribbo (yes, he has an abbreviation now) is.

Just saw the trailer for part 2...now that looks good:

Ending totally shocked me of part 1 and part 2 looks to be really good.

That ending was immense. Though maybe the longest death scene in anything ever. :lol

The Time Lords should have had some real backstory first though, they didnt feel very like the enemy. And Rassilion! Sweet.

As far as the new Doctor goes, should be fun seeing how he works out. My favorite 2 Doctors were both critisized for now being 'The Doctor' before they started (Davidson and Tennant) so I have high hopes for Smith.

had a bit of a LOTR ending eg long as hell
